Queen of the Qanun returns to Bradford on Avon

Syrian master musician Maya Youssef has been hailed the ‘queen of the qanun’ (an Arabic stringed instrument). Her music explores her extraordinary life story. She will be performing material from her first and second albums, Syrian Dreams and Finding Home, alongside new material.

Maya’s intense and thoughtful music is rooted in the Arabic classical tradition but forges pathways into jazz, Western classical and Latin styles. It explores the emotional and healing qualities of music. For her, the act of playing music is the opposite of death and destruction; it is a life- and hope-affirming act and an antidote to what is happening, not only in Syria, but in the whole world,

For this special concert, Maya is joined be percussionist Elizabeth Nott and pianist Ben Smith (rather than Zoe Rahman as previously advertised). Ben Smith is a frequent collaborator with Maya, a pianist hailed as a player of “extraordinary precision and insight” (The Guardian).
