Wiltshire Youth Jazz Orchestra (WYJO) provides young jazz musicians from Wiltshire and the surrounding area with opportunities to perform with like-minded young musicians and leading professionals. Led by experienced local jazz tutor Mike Daniels, the ensemble meets for two courses per year at WMC.
As a part of Wiltshire Music Centre’s partnership with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Great Britain (NYJO), WYJO regularly performs alongside leading young musicians from the group called the NYJO Ambassadors under the leadership of Mark Armstrong, Musical Director of NYJO. In addition to this, WYJO has played alongside a number of leading performers, including Gwilym Simcock, Jason Rebello and Empirical Jazz.
Wiltshire Music Centre is a National Youth Jazz Orchestra Regional Academy and is the host of Wiltshire Jazz Academy, a National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) Regional Academy Partner.
How do I join?
We encourage you to attend our Wiltshire Jazz Academy sessions first – these are monthly practical sessions which are aimed at developing players’ technique and ensemble skills. Our tutor team can then get to know you and assess whether you’re ready to join WYJO. If you are, you’ll be invited to an informal audition.
Participation Fees
Fixed cost to be paid by all WYJO members to cover the general cost of running the ensemble. This fee guarantees participation in any virtual projects delivered due to course cancellations throughout the year. The Membership Fee is non-refundable.
Fully refundable if WMC cancels any activity in the building.
With support from Wiltshire Music Connect and individual donors, we have a small fund that can offer up to 70% financial assistance with course fees for those needing support. Please contact creativelearning@wiltshiremusic.org.uk or call 01225 860100 to learn more.
Sibling WYJO Members are eligible for a 5% reduction on all fees.
