Excellent local orchestra performs works by Smyth, Leibermann and Sibelius

The concert opens with Ethel Smyth’s Overture to her 1904 opera The Wreckers, followed by the highly attractive and unjustly neglected flute concerto by Leibermann – a contemporary American composer, it’s a surprisingly romantic work making considerable demands on the soloist. The concert closes with Sibelius’ masterpiece, his 5th Symphony, arguably
his finest symphonic achievement.
